BAHAWALPUR:

A murder suspect was killed in a police encounter on Wednesday. Rahim Yar Khan DPO Zahid Nawaz Murawat said Iqbal Jeweller had murdered his wife and two daughters last week.

On January 16, police had discovered the bodies of a 10-year-old girl and a 25-year-old woman in sugarcane fields. Neither had been molested and both of them had been strangled. The police had been unable to establish a link between the two murders at that time. However, on January 17, they came across the body of a six-year-old girl and realised that the two girls and the woman were related.

Further investigation revealed that the woman, identified as Shumaila Bibi, was secretly married to Iqbal Jeweller, a resident of Sadiqabad,. She already had two children from a previous marriage. This was Iqbal Jeweller’s second marriage and his other wife was unaware of it.

On January 16, Iqbal Jeweller was travelling from Sadiqabad to Bahawalpur. He strangled Shumail Bibi and her daughters Abeera, 10, and Sonia, 6, near Liaquatpur and dumped their bodies in sugarcane fields.

Sadiqabad police arrested Iqbal Jeweller on Tuesday. He confessed to killing the three on TV.

DPO Murawat said that the suspect had been taken to the location where he had left the murder weapon. “There Iqbal Jeweller snatched a gun from a policeman and started shooting at the police. The cops shot back and he was killed.”
