Port Qasim: DP World opens new container terminal

The first of three phases completed, capacity increased by 30 per cent.

KARACHI: Global marine terminal operator, DP World has opened its new container terminal in Port Qasim, Karachi and also celebrated the arrival of its first French vessel, CMA CGM Wagner.

Chairman, Port Qasim Authority, Vice Admiral Muhammad Shafi presented a commemorative plaque to the Captain of the 276- metre long and 40- metre wide CMA CGM Wagner at a simple ceremony attended by senior managers from DP World Karachi, representatives of ship owners, diplomats and port staff.

The opening of Terminal 2, a major expansion of DP World Karachi, has taken the capacity of Port Qasim to around 1.2 million TEU (twenty foot equivalent container units) from around 900,000 TEU and marks the successful completion of the first of DP World’s three-phase development – the largest ever investment in Pakistan’s port sector.

CEO, DP World, Mohammed Sharaf said: “Inauguration of Terminal 2 at Port Qasim marks an important milestone in DP World’s expansion plans for the South Asian region.”
