PESHAWAR:

The K-P Police concluded the ongoing process of recruiting 287 relatives of those police officials who died in the line of duty. They have been instated for the post of assistant sub inspectors (ASI).

The 287 people have been recruited after 300 posts were approved by the chief minister in August 2015 for the children or heirs of the martyred police officials. Some of the ASIs recruited are those whose parents were killed in the 1990s.

Talking to The Express Tribune, DIG Establishment Najeebur Rehman Bugvi said in the past, there was a 5% quota for ASI seats to be given to the heirs. However, recruitment for these seats was not based on merit, which is why many relatives of those martyred had been ignored during the recruitment process.

“Now, it has been decided to hire the children in the order of the dates their parents were killed, meaning the people whose parents were killed before will get hired first. It is a standing order, which is indeed a law,” Bugvi said. The K-P government, acting accordingly, created the posts. The recruitment process is based on the date written in the FIRs and no personal preferences could influence it, Bugvi added.

Another official told The Express Tribune former IGP Akbar Khan Hoti had decided only those people would be hired as ASIs whose parents’ sacrifices were considered “adequate” by senior police officials. “Since it was a subjective selection, it caused widespread unrest.”

During the PTI government it was decided the relatives would be recruited as constables instead of ASIs, the official said. “They would have been promoted once ASI posts would be available.” However, the suggestion was met with dissatisfaction among the children of the martyrs. “They were suspicious they would never get promoted. It was a big problem,” he explained.

He added a special request was sent to the CM who announced creating 300 ASI posts in police, especially for the heirs of the martyrs. “The problem is solved for the time being. Police casualties have decreased with the decrease in terrorism cases,” he said.
