Compromise reached: Murder convict’s execution deferred

The scheduled execution o1f a murder convict in Jhang has been deferred at the last minute after the opposing parties reached a compromise on Wednesday.


A Prisons Department spokesperson said on Wednesday that a trial court had awarded the death penalty to Umar Daraz in connection with a murder case in Jhang.

The verdict of the lower court had been upheld by higher courts while the convict’s mercy petition was also rejected by the president. He said that the convict had exhausted all avenues of appeal.

Daraz was slated to be executed on January 15 after his black warrants had been issued.

Progress on this front was stalled after the family of the deceased reached an agreement with that of the convict.
