Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Pakistan to take immediate action after the attack on an Indian air force base in Pathankot.

Modi “strongly emphasised the need for Pakistan to take firm and immediate action against the organisations and individuals responsible for and linked to the Pathankot terrorist attack,” the Indian government said in a statement, after Modi spoke by telephone to Nawaz Sharif.

Pathankot attack: Indian mulls options on planned Pakistan talks

“PM Nawaz called Modi to convey sorrow and grief on the loss of life in Pathankot terror attack,” a PM House statement said. “PM stated that terrorists always try to derail the peace process between the two countries.”

Further, the PM was quoted as saying that Pakistan will investigate in detail on the leads and information provided by the government of India. “Both the premiers showed resolve to fight out terrorism together through mutual cooperation,” the statement added.

Modi’s office said New Delhi had given Islamabad “specific and actionable information” on the audacious attack, which came just days after a landmark visit to Pakistan by the Indian premier raised hopes of improved relations.

Security officials suspect the gunmen — five of whom were killed — belonged to the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed, the group that staged a 2001 attack on the Indian parliament which brought the two countries to the brink of war.

Pathankot attack: US ‘expects’ Pakistan to act against India attackers

In a statement, Modi’s office said Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Nawaz had telephoned him to discuss the attack on the Pathankot base in the northern state of Punjab near the border with Pakistan.

Modi “strongly emphasised the need for Pakistan to take firm and immediate action against the organisations and individuals responsible for and linked to the Pathankot terrorist attack,” said the statement.

“Specific and actionable information in this regard has been provided to Pakistan.” It said Nawaz had given assurances that his government would take “prompt and decisive action”.

Earlier Pakistan said it was working on the ‘leads’ provided by the Indian government about the Pathankot air base attack in a significant move that may help keep the fragile thaw in frosty relations between the two neighbours intact. “In line with Pakistan’s commitment to effectively counter and eradicate terrorism, the government is in touch with the Indian government and is working on the leads provided by it,” the statement said.

The statement came hours after a Kashmiri separatists’ alliance, the UJC, claimed responsibility for the Pathankot attack, although the Indian media insists the attackers were members of the banned Jaish-e-Muhammad militant group.

Pathankot assault: Kashmir-based group claims air base attack

Officially, India has not yet pointed finger at Pakistan. The National Security Guard (NSG), which leading the operation at the base, merely said it was a Fidayeen attack – which means the attackers knew they were going to their death. “These terrorists had come well prepared and were heavily armed” the NSG said in a short briefing.

Further, the United States on Tuesday said it ‘expects’ Pakistan to act against Indian air base attackers and target militant groups.

Moreover, Modi held a meeting with top officials, including national security adviser Ajit Doval and foreign secretary S Jaishankar to discuss the incident.

An excellent step. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s call to Modi demonstrates Pakistan’s commitment in eradicating terrorism from the region. Pakistan and India can progress faster if they maintain friendly relations. Recommend

PM Nawaz Sharif called Modi to assure his support,” said Indian defence minister Manohar Parrikar while addressing a press conference.

Is the Prime Minister planning to send his General in battle dress to extend the zrb e zarb operations in the Indian Punjab now?

We peace loving people of Pakistan and India trust and support our PMs. In unity we can destroy the culture of “divide and rule!” Terrorism is one manifestation of this “divide and rule” implanted barbarism.Recommend

It is no fault of yours but of your leaders who have indoctrinated you in believing that they have the control over the violent forces which are operating in your region. Neither New Dehli nor Islamabad or Lahore are out of reach for them.

Yesterday I lost my hopes to improve relations, but after hearing Nawaz Sharif today I hope terrorists shall get the message.. Do not hesitate to arrest the handlers and punish them and move on instead of blaming each other.

Why Indians always accuse Pakistan for attacks on their home territory.Instead of looking at the causes for the failings of their intelligent agencies. They just use Pakistan as their bogy. After 67 years anonymity and hate towards Pakistan.Time has come for Indians to grow up and change their mind set against Pakistan and should turn a new leaf of friendship between the two countries.LET PEOPLE OF THE REGION HAVE PEACEFULL LIFE FOR EVERY ONE.Hate doesn’t give any pleasure but only sufferings.Recommend

For a change, and a healthy change for that matter, the Indian reaction to terrorist attack on Pathankot air base has been muted, and there is no immediate finger-pointing at Pakistan, accompanied by howling and shouting which has been the norm in the past.

And Nawaz Sharif’s initiative to ring Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and assuring him of all support, and a promise to pursue the matter vigorously at our end, has been most appropriate.

India also claims that it has provided Pakistan some actionable information. Obviously, Pakistan ought to work on it sincerely and expeditiously, and produce some results as soon as possible, in order to discourage the trouble-makers on both sides of the border who would obviously be unhappy with the improvement in relations between the two countries and would do their best to spoil things as much as they can.

Of course the leaders of both countries have to realize that real improvement in relations can come about only with them being open, honest and straight in dealings, as well as stoppage of double games both played against each other in the past.

@S.R.H. Hashmi: . It is question of capacity. Both diplomatic and military. Modi suffered set backs when he drummed up frenzy against Muslim of india, and then provoked Pakistan over almost every incident. Every thing has a life span. Modi’s chicanery has run its life span.

Still, we better be careful. India wants peace without resolving Kashmir. It wants NSG & UNSC membership. Soft reaction is tactical. I guess. Recommend

Indian prime minister , believed all these days that he can run the business of India like a little provincial govt. wrong. It is too big and very complex. With all his drama, personal diplomacy it won’t work. Remember Pakistan has lots of experience in dodging, denying and deflecting and fooling friends and foes alike in the art of survival game. Remember Kargill! Sharif wined, and dined former Indian PM , then voila! Kargill stab in the back came. Now it is the turn of

Sharif will ask for solid proof and it would take years and even if proven the hand of Pak agencies in this heinous crimes, he would put the blame on ‘non-state actors’ to avoid taking responsibility. Remember Mumai terrorist acts. What happened ?

Nothing is going to come out of this Tamasha. Modi has been taken for a ride, for he is too naive.Recommend

In this world of media manipulation, everythig revolves around the perception that one can creates. India managed to create the perception that, it is them who had gone extra length to meet Nawaz Sharif in Lahore to normalise relation with Pakistan and here are Pakistan based terrorist group that attacked Pathankot. This is a game that the Modi played with Pakistan.which Pakistani current leadership fails to understand.Recommend

Did anybody remember how many months it took India to reach the culprits that had executed incident of SUMJOTA EXPRESS, in India itself? Do India expect that it is just like a “switch on” process to find the culprits, whereas the incident has happened in India. Did you, whether a Pakistani or Indian, forgotten that for every incident that happened there or even in Afghanistan, India (Government and media) immediately blamed Pakistan. Even for incident of Sumjota Express, it was the Pakistan that was being blamed and later it was found that it were their own people. Did India ever seek from Pakistan to forgive them for the lies that they had said after the incidents?.
Where was and is USA now, with reference to the incident of Sumjota Express? Is there any record of condemnation by USA of the Indian organizations and elements that had executed the incident of Sumjota Express.? USA needs to establish its credibility first, before it issue any statement on any of such incidents.Recommend
