KARACHI: Police officials have arrested five suspected criminals, including alleged members of a gang involved in looting passengers at the airport.

The arrests of the gang members were disclosed by District Central Investigations-II SSP Arib Maher during a press conference at his office on Monday. Maher said the two gang members — Shoaib and Asif — were arrested by the investigation wing of New Karachi police. Two pistols, bullets, a laptop and a camera were recovered from them.

The officer said the police also raided the hideout of the gang's leader in Surjani, however, he managed to escape under the cover of fire along with his brother. The SSP said the arrested suspects have revealed their involvement in robbing passengers going to and coming from Jinnah International Airport. Moreover, the suspects also confessed to their involvement in various cases of house robberies, he informed.

Separately, the Nabi Bux police claimed to have apprehended three suspects allegedly involved in various cases of street crimes and car snatching. ASP Shehla Qureshi, addressing a press conference at her office, identified the suspects as Aslam, Kamran and Asif.

She said they were involved in various cases of street crimes, particularly stealing motorcycles. They have sold over a dozen motorcycles after stealing them, she said, adding that nearly half-a-dozen stolen or snatched motorcycles have been recovered from their possession.

The cases against the suspects have been registered and further investigation is under way, she explained.
