Rangers claim to have arrested half a dozen suspected militants during various raids

KARACHI: An alleged member of a banned outfit was killed while the paramilitary Rangers claim to have apprehended half a dozen suspected militants during various targeted raids and operations in different parts of the metropolis on Sunday.

An alleged member of a banned outfit was killed in an encounter with the police in Orangi Town within the limits of Mominabad police station. Police officials said that the encounter took place when the police officials conducting routine checking in the area tried to intercept two suspects riding a motorcycle. The militants resorted to indiscriminate fire at the police in a bid to escape. In the retaliatory fire by the police, one of the suspects was killed while his companion managed to escape under the cover of fire. The body was later shifted to the Edhi morgue in Sohrab Goth for identification purpose after medico-legal formalities were completed at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Police officials claimed that the suspect belonged to the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Swat chapter. A weapon was also seized from his possession. A case was registered while further investigations are underway.

Meanwhile, the Rangers seem to have sped up their action against criminals and terrorist mafias in the city since the federal government gave the force special powers. During targeted raids and operations, the force has apprehended half a dozen suspects.

A Rangers spokesperson said that the arrests were made during raids in different parts of city including Landhi, Nazimabad and Orangi Town.

The spokesperson said that terrorists affiliated with proscribed groups and extortionists were among those arrested. Weapons were also seized from their possession. The suspects were shifted to an undisclosed location for further questioning.
