Half-centuries by Peter Handscomb and Glenn Maxwell guided Melbourne Stars to a five-wicket win over Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League on Sunday.
Hosts Sixers had elected to bat first and managed to make 139 after losing the wickets of Michael Lumb and Brad Haddin early on. Nic Maddinson (25), Moises Henriques (41) and Jordan Silk (35) steadied the ship to set a 140-run target. Ben Hilfenhaus took two wickets for the Stars.
In reply, Maxwell and Handscomb combined to make 50 and 52 runs respectively to set the foundations for the chase, while David Hussey made an unbeaten 24 to see his side through. Sixers’ Doug Bolinger, meanwhile, claimed two scalps.
The win was Stars’ first triumph in the league and takes them to fifth in the table with two points. Sixers, meanwhile, suffered their second defeat of the tournament.
