How many Bismas will it take to put an end to this sinister, extravagant evil of VIP culture?

Letter December 27, 2015

KARACHI: We are well-acquainted with Bisma’s unfortunate death upon being denied timely entry to the Civil Hospital because Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari was there to inaugurate the trauma centre. This time, it was Bilawal. Next time, it could be any other politician. It is not the personality involved that matters, but the malady of VIP culture itself. What is so important about Bilawal’s life that was not important about Bisma’s life? How many Bismas will it take to put an end to this sinister, extravagant evil of VIP culture?

Only a tragedy can unite our people and embolden them to voice their complaints against a pre-existing evil. What about all those Bismas whose deaths went unnoticed? This incident is presently in the limelight, but for how long will this be the case? The media may soon lose interest and the emotions of the people will dull too. Will it take another Bisma to awaken us again to voice our disapproval of VIP culture?
