KARACHI: The family of a young worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) staged a protest against police for the extrajudicial killing of their loved one.

Abdul Qadir, a resident of Baldia Town, was taken into custody by Saeedabad police during a raid at his residence a few days ago.

The victim's body was later found on December 21 on a road within the Mochko police limits, where the murder case was also registered against unidentified persons.

The family staged a protest against the Saeedabad police after they found the body and identified him at the Edhi morgue in Sohrab Goth late on Wednesday night.

"Everyone knows Qadir was taken into custody by the police. Since his arrest we visited the police station multiple times but none of them admitted to his arrest, even though the police accused him of stealing during his apprehension," the family claimed.

The family accused a police constable, Nazir, of the Saeedabad police station, of being the prime suspect in Qadir's abduction and killing.

Following the news, several MQM leaders, including Khawaja Izharul Hassan, also joined the protesters while expressing their sorrow.

"We will raise the issue in every assembly and the parliament if needed," said the MQM leader.

Police officials have taken an accused cop into custody and initiated further investigations.

"We are questioning a policeman in the investigation, as the family submitted an application to police to register a case against him for Qadir's killing," said Baldia division SP Raees Abdul Ghani while talking to The Express Tribune.

"Now the police investigation wing is investigating the case and will definitely arrest the accused cop or others if found guilty," he assured, adding that further investigations were underway.
