LAHORE: The Government College University (GCU) has decided to help raise funds for its students who cannot pay their way with help from fellow students and university faculty.

The GCU Welfare Society in collaboration with the GCU Endowment Fund Trust on Sunday initiated a three-week fund-raising awareness campaign titled Help the Helpless.

Dr Khalid Manzoor Butt, the GCU Welfare Society advisor, said that the campaign was aimed at raising awareness among the Old Ravians and students about the importance of helping the deserving students and collecting funds to finance them.

He said that the campaign, launched in 2010, was a success already. He said that some 150 volunteers had already joined hands with the society members.

Dr Butt said that the Society had arranged scores of activities, including art competitions, workshops, film screening and bonfire as a part of the campaign.

Besides such recreational activities, motivational lectures on importance of promotion of education were also a part of the campaign.

Dr Butt said that the students would meet prominent members of the civil society, business organisations and noted Old Ravians and request them to help the cause. GCU vice chancellor Prof Khalid Aftab said that universities were not only meant to produce scholars, scientists and engineers, but also good human beings.

“The ‘haves’ have a responsibility towards ‘have-nots’ and we are trying to make our future generation aware of that,” he said.

Dr Aftab said that that every year more than 2,100 GCU students applied for financial aid. Unfortunately, he said, the university could only accommodate a fraction. Last year, the university allocated Rs11 million for the needy students from its budget, he said.

The university will hold a bonfire on January 18, and a painting and art competition on January 11, both on the campus, to generate funds for the purpose.
