KARACHI:

Hours after indicting him for contempt of court over the defiant attitude of his force, the Sindh High Court (SHC) once again summoned IG Ghulam Hyder Jamali on Tuesday after some policemen whisked away a citizen despite the grant of pre-arrest bail by the court.

This time, the applicant was Zahid Noor, a resident of Tando Muhammad Khan. A bench, headed by Justice Abdul Ghani Soomro, had granted pre-arrest bail to the applicant, who had applied for bail at the SHC's principal seat instead of his hometown, apprehending arrest by the police.

According to him, the police had booked him in a false case relating to hurling threats and violence. Noor had also requested the court to provide him guards to thwart any attempt to arrest him by the policemen in two mobile vans stationed outside the SHC building.

Court officials told The Express Tribune that considering his request, the SHC's registrar deputed police guards to take him outside the court premises. However, the policemen snatched the applicant from the high court's guards and drove him away.

Later, the registrar prepared a note describing the whole incident and placed the same before the SHC Chief Justice Sajjad Ali Shah to take notice. Sources said the chief justice summoned IG Jamali personally to explain the conduct of his police force. They said that IG Jamali appeared at around 5pm before the SHC registrar and assured that he would take notice of the conduct of the policemen and take action according to the law against those found involved in the incident.

IG Jamali was directed to file a report explaining the action against those responsible for perusal of the SHC CJ.
