PEMRA issues notices to TV channels for 'hurling false allegations, giving airtime to terrorists'

Authority sends notices to Royal TV, TV One, AAJ TV and Waqt News warning action will be taken against all violators

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) on Tuesday initiated punitive action against certain local channels for “hurling false allegations and passing highly personalised, abusive and derogatory remarks against individuals” as well as “giving space to terror outfits threatening the state of Pakistan.”

The authority sent notices to Royal TV, TV One, AAJ TV and Waqt News this week warning that action will be taken against all violators without discrimination, a press release said.

The press release added that the said channels hurled false allegations and passed highly personal, abusive and derogatory remarks against individuals and provided airtime to terror outfits threatening the state.

The authority stressed upon the TV channels to support the National Action Plan in letter and spirit by denying space to elements defending terror groups or those attempting to divert state institutions' attention from the ongoing war on terror.

PEMRA said it has resolved to ensure that TV screens shall not be used as a platform to churn hate, malaise and indecency against any individual, institution or state or telecast anything which viewers find offensive and harmful to their state, themselves, their children or the society in general.
