Mooroo back with video for ‘Mariam’

Stop-motion tape helmed by both professional film-makers and students

KARACHI: For traditional animators, stop-motion remains a triumph of the imagination. The ability to physically manipulate an object or subject that would otherwise remain stationary helps this genre of visual arts branch out into the live-action category. Musician and sketch-artist Mooroo, who has a penchant for producing interesting music videos, continues the tradition with his latest offering —  a stop-motion video for his single Mariam.

Unlike his previous music videos, such as Itni Chikni and Awaam, Mooroo did not helm the video for the song and handed over the reins to alumni and current media sciences students at Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (Szabist).

The video has been directed by Salman Noorani and Eruj Hadi has served as its art director. As the music video for Mariam is stop-motion based, it utilised nearly 17 handmade sets, with the production team making use of 1,500 chart papers to create the background.



This is not the first time such a video has been made for a Pakistani song. Musician Zeeshan Parwez previously directed a similar video for Ali Azmat’s song Gallan. Parwez commended the efforts of the young film-makers, adding “Having made two to three stop-motion projects in the past, I know how much time and dedication it takes to compose and execute a single shot.”

He added, “Producing a full-length music video is another level of hard work. Mooroo’s latest video by Salman is an example of great results coming out of a good collaboration. It was pure joy to watch this video and it really makes me happy. Congratulations and thanks to the team for making me feel even closer to Pakistan.”
