PESHAWAR: Islamia College University does not just stand on a structure of bricks and mortar; it stands on the experience and efforts of faculty members who made it one of the best institutes in Pakistan. ICU alumnus Dr Amjad Hussain, a renowned cardio surgeon, was speaking at the closing ceremony of centennial celebrations for his alma mater at Khyber Union Hall. He was invited as chief guest on Saturday and dedicated his address to eminent ICU teacher Professor H M Close.

College days

Hussain was a student of ICU in the 1950s. In his address, he recalled his days at the institute and paid tribute to the teachers of his time: Chaudhary Sarwar, Professor Dr Nawazish Ali Qizlbash and others.

“These were the towering personalities in the field of teaching and because of their efforts and dedication, ICU stands amidst excellent institutes in the country,” said Hussain. He suggested maintaining a database of alumni of ICU who are serving across the globe.

ICU Vice Chancellor Ajmal Khan appreciated Hussain’s kind words. ANP Senator Abdul Nabi Bangash and MNA Shahabuddin Khan, former students of the institute, spoke about their student life on the occasion.

Commemoration

Two events took place at Islamia Collegiate School and ICU to mark the end of centenary celebrations. An Urdu-Pashto poetry recitation was held in addition to a book launch. The book is about the life and achievements of Bashir Ahmed Bilour. The book launch was held under the auspices of the Department of Political Science, ICU.

The third convocation of ICU graduates for 2013-14 will be held on Sunday (today) at Roos-Keppel Hall in the institute.
