ISLAMABAD:

On the heels of the Climate Change summit in Paris, Japan has provided 34 hybrid vehicles to Pakistan’s national highways and motorway police on Thursday.

Japanese Ambassador Hiroshi Inomata was present at the handing over ceremony.

He was joined by Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Sheikh Aftab Ahmed.

“Improved security is integral to economic development and Japan is committed to help the law enforcement agencies in Pakistan,” said the ambassador.

He said his government has provided training opportunities to around 45 Pakistani police officers during the last ten years in areas such as forensic science, drug control and terrorism investigation.

In addition, Japan also agreed to install scanning devices for the purpose of security at three international airports and at two ports in Pakistan and now the project is currently underway.

The provision of environment-friendly cars to the Pakistani police helps the government reflect the global stance on climate change as well.

This is in keeping with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzõ Abe’s “Action for Cool Earth 2.0” (ACE 2.0), announced at the summit.

Key components of ACE 2.0 include supporting developing countries which have been negatively impacted by climate change.

In total 123 hybrid cars will be handed over to the interior ministry by Japan International Cooperation System (JICS) in instalments.

The assistance is part of Japanese government’s non-project grant aid an initiative designed to promote socio-economic development in developing countries.
