Drug regulation: Skin care, herbal products in peril

FPCCI has requested Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to personally intervene in reversing the decision

KARACHI: The Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) has requested Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to personally intervene in reversing a decision, which bars the import of herbal and other natural medicines into the country after December 31. As per an order of the Drug Regulatory Authority skin care products, herbal, traditional, Chinese, and other food supplements have to be registered with the authority, according to a FPCCI’s Senior Vice Chairman Aamir Iqbal. “There are thousands of products and the backlog has not been cleared. How do they expect us to get all the products registered in few days?” The restriction would choke not just the medicines but also badly hurt specialists who mostly recommend imported skincare products, he added.
