Haq made the remarks at a ceremony organised to honour Pakistani children who had struck gold in the 2015 World Education Games in Sydney.
The tennis star said parents should make sure that children participated in sports. Haq also counselled them to focus on children’s education, saying that it was the greatest investment they could make.
Thespian Irfan Khoosat said he had devoted a great deal of time and attention to educating his children.
He said higher education was the most important aspect of one’s life. Khoosat said parents should strive to provide children with quality higher education.
Actor Ghulam Mohiuddin said the government should promote sports competitions to enable Pakistan to adequately compete with other states.
He said such events provided the young with an opportunity to excel.
Haq, the chief guest, distributed gold medals among winning children and praised their performance. MPA Bushra Anjum Butt gave away silver and bronze models.
Erstwhile hockey captain Muhammad Saqlain distributed awards among grade-4 students. Mohiuddin and Khoosat also distributed certificates among winning students.
Grade-9 student Ali Saud, who was presented the champion of the champions award, said it felt great to receive the honour. He said learning through sports was the best way to learn. “This is a great achievement for all of us. It bodes well for promoting education among the young,” Saud said.
Grade-7 student Abeeha Fatima said it felt great to receive an honour in front of scores of international students. She said she had felt ecstatic when it was announced that Pakistan had secured the 2015 World Education Cup.
The mother of Sarah Rashid and Zeeshan Rashid, the youngest students to be presented gold medals, said she had felt extremely proud when her children had been presented with the medals.
3P Learning programme manager Iffat Ahmar said the children had made their parents proud and they were the pride of the nation. Ahmar said they had also promoted a soft image of the nation. She said they had showed that there was no dearth of talent in Pakistan.
Students from 130 countries had participated in the games. Around 30,000 students from various educational institutes across the nation had participated in the event.
The contest, a bi-annual occurrence, features educational games.
The event in the city was organised by 3P Learning.
