Pakistan accords highest importance to nuclear safety, security: Aizaz

Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry calls on DG IAEA and secretary general foreign affairs of Austria during his visit to Vienna

Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry said on Monday that Pakistan attaches highest significance to its nuclear safety and security.

During his visit to Vienna, the foreign secretary told the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano that Pakistan is fully meeting obligations in regards to its nuclear safety and security, Radio Pakistan reported.



Further, Chaudhry lauded the agency’s role in promoting peaceful uses of nuclear technology through its Technical Cooperation Programme.

The DG IAEA expressed his satisfaction over implementation of the agency’s safeguard measures in the country while appreciating the nuclear safety and security record of Pakistan.

Earlier, during a meeting with Secretary General Foreign Affairs of Austria, Dr Michael Linhart, the foreign secretary said that Pakistan’s nuclear policy rests on the twin pillars of restraint and responsibility and is exclusively geared towards maintaining strategic stability in South Asia.



The foreign secretary further briefed his Austrian counterpart on the notable gains achieved by the country during its counter-terrorism campaign besides discussing matters of mutual interest, including migration, human rights, as well as cooperation in multilateral fora.

The two sides reportedly expressed satisfaction at the positive trajectory of bilateral relations, emphasising the need for enhanced trade and investment.
