KARACHI: After three years of marriage, actor-director Azfar Ali and VJ-turned-actor Naveen Waqar have parted ways.

“I have divorced my now ex-wife Naveen Waqar. We’ve been separated since July 2015 and then I filed for divorce which came through in November,” Azfar told The Express Tribune.

Azfar says that since they’re both public figures, it is important for him to inform his fans and fraternity about the divorce by making an official announcement and to prevent fabricated stories from cropping up.

“The news of our marriage was blown way out of proportion and since it eventually became public news and information, I don’t want to keep anybody in the dark now,” said Azfar.

“I also chose to do this [disclose the news] because a lot of people are calling me and inviting us to their shows for a joint interview. I want everybody to know, once and for all, that we have separated and there is no need for this.”

According to Azfar, the decision to split was mutual. “I don’t think the reason behind the divorce is important, it’ll be enough to say that we were not getting along and if things are not happy at home, there is no point in dragging them on,” he said.

5 short-lived celebrity marriages that made headlines

Naveen, who started off as a VJ and became a household name after Humsafar, was not available for comment despite repeated attempts. The Express Tribune was able to reach out to her brother, Faraz Waqar, who also refused to speak on the issue, stating it is a strictly personal matter.

Azfar was earlier married to actor Salma Hasan for 11 years, with whom he has a daughter. Salma divorced Azfar, following his marriage to Naveen.

    I don’t know what these girls see in this thug that different decent girls agree to marry him even after knowing his track record. Recommend

    They seemed happy on geos morning show few months ago, like best fruends kinda relationship but even they couldn’t make it work. Why is divorce the solution for every problem in a marriage these days? This is quite shocking but I feel Azfar is too involved in his work and didn’t give time to Navin and Salma also said he was always busy and they hardly spoke. I always used to think Mani kaise shaadi chalyega, he is a kid himself but he is mature in this regards more than Azfar. I always liked Azfar more on the radio show but he messed it this time too. I hope Salma and Azfar can patch things up, for Fatima at least.. And Navin is a great girl should try in movies, she’ll be great in them and I hope people show them respect and not taunt like happened at the time of their marriage. Recommend

    This man should be hanged upside down in Teen Talwar for exactly 23 hours. After that he should be sent to dungeons.

    Such people have made marriage such a fickle institute. They are setting very bad examples for our society and family system.Recommend

    @Gobi:
    Gobi you are too innocent…i don’t know what you meant by patch up…but if your patching up means they(azfar and salma) should marry again then unfortunately it cannot happen as for that Salma will have to marry some other guy and will have to live with him for at-least 6 months then if she wants can divorce that other guy to marry azfar again. After how the imran rehma divorce was enjoyed by the media, how on the earth it is possible that naveen will respond to media. No response was the best response she could offer.Recommend
