Well Hello there, Adele: Play, relate, repeat
With its riveting music and genuine lyrics, 'Hello' has paved way for great expectations from Adele.
For most people, when it comes to crowning a contemporary pop music diva, there are fewer choices other than Beyonce and Taylor Swift. Or maybe even Lady Gaga. But for me, there has always been only one contemporary pop-queen and she very recently launched her new single, Hello.
Adele is that one singer in recent past about whom I have rarely ever heard a negative comment. People are either in love with her or are indifferent to her – but no one hates her. And even those who are indifferent can’t help but increase the volume whenever her songs come on the radio or on a friend’s playlist.
The British singer came to the spotlight in 2008, when her debut album ‘19’ gave music lovers a taste of her heartfelt lyrics and her tantalising melodies. Songs like ‘Chasing Pavements’ and ‘Make You Feel My Love’ became huge favourites and even other singers appreciated Adele for her music. I, too, was introduced to Adele’s songs around this time by a friend, and I became a fan then and there.
Three years later, in 2011, when she released her second album, ‘21’, it became an instant hit. People started lining up for her concerts and public appearances and many fans felt a sense of connection to her.
And why wouldn’t they?
Her songs speak to her fans like none other. Unlike Beyonce, who can come off a bit aggressive in her tracks, or Taylor Swift, who can be a bit self-absorbed with her lyrics, Adele’s music feels like she has written the song just for you, keeping your feelings in mind.
Her hit song, ‘Someone Like You’, works as a catharsis for many even today, while her famous ‘Rolling In The Deep’ became an anthem for most youngsters – myself included. She taught us that the only way to deal with heartache is to ‘Set Fire To The Rain’ and she addressed our vulnerability with her ‘Turning Tables’.
She has been a pop icon for all and sundry and this is why it isn’t surprising to see that, within a week of her new release, her song has already gotten more than 86 million views.
Adele is set to release her new album, ‘25’, on November 20, 2015 after a four-year hiatus, and I cannot wait to get my hands on it. Hello, with its riveting music and its genuine lyrics, has paved way for great expectations from Adele and, I am sure, she won’t disappoint us this time either.
Until then, I have Hello on repeat on my playlist.
