He is loyal , educated , conscience person , patriotic.is there any leader of pakistan having all these attributes? If he dated women in the past what is new in this? he got the fame no one had in the history of pakistan so every one should accept this .period.

As conern their personal life scandles whatever have not directly or indirectly hurt Pakistan image in global world. Reality is we need people who are not into crowd gathering and politics of baradri and unjust favours. I wish one day Pakistan can have a political system where you do not have to gather crowds. And campaigns are run on manifesto which is available online. Politics of baradri, favours, and big gatherings are from 19th century. We are in election campaign here in Canada, they are scheduled for May 2nd,2011. Canadian news channel CBC has a link on their site that asks your opinion on about 30 questions and gives you an idea where you stand in your ideology and what party's manifesto is closer to your ideas. Fact that the people like me who were never interested with politics of Pakistan and stayed in on the election day plan to vote this time is a sign that his popularity is increasing. People themselves are the losers when they keep voting for current corrupt polititions. Unfortunately military coups enabled our current corrupt polititions get sympathy vote. Things will change and system will mature after we have a few assemblies complete their terms. Then people will realize that they are at fault themselves for keep on choosing same people over and over again. I know that day is not tomorrow but one day.

After all the articles about Imran Khan's son, family, money, playboy life - and all that stuff being used as criticism, even though it has NOTHING to do with his politics, this is a breath of fresh air. Its not the first attempt at his defense, but its definitely the recent best. Great job!

We should promote such men to be leaders of Pakistan in fact it is people like him i feel that can take Pakistan out of the mess its in before its annihilated.

Gathering crowd is not a measure of sucess or even popularity. We all know how it is done in Pakistani politics. After retirement from cricket, he did not take up a job in ICC or PCB or, a TV Channel. Neither was he interested in going abroad and make money by providing coaching services. Rather he stayed in his homeland, build a hospital for the poor, and participated in politics to bring a change in Pakistan. He got a real chance to be a part of government during Musharraf's regime, but he did not sacrifice on his principles. We should promote people are like Imran Khan. Since late 80s, we have been trying the same corrupt politicans again and again. Why don't we give a chance to someone like Imran Khan this time who is really passionate to being a change to this system.

He led the Pakistani cricket team to world cup victory when the odds of Pakistani team accomplishing such a feat was minimum, only on the basis of his sheer ability to lead and strong character. As a human being and a Pakistani, he has showed great interest in the welfare of his fellow countrymen. He sought to put his popularity to the right use in creating a Cancer Hospital and succeeded when most of the experts initially thought such a project to be far-fetched for a country like Pakistan. This institution is continuing to provide free medical care to 70 percent of its patients, and a medical care that is up to international standards. It is also a research oriented institution and provides a model for future projects in the medical arena. Not only that, he has continued to work tirelessly amidst any adversity that struck his countrymen, whether it is the earthquake of 2005 or the last year devastating floods (where he collected two billion in a very short span of time). He has worked on the ground for welfare of his people and not just spoken words. He has walked the walk. As a politician, he is only man who has been offered power by dictators and established parties alike (Nawas in 1997, and Musharraf in 2002), yet rejected their offers as it would have hampered his vision of reforming the political and judicial system of Pakistan. He has chosen the tougher road, the path of struggle because he wants to bring real change. We used to read in books about past great leaders whom we were told were praised even by their enemas for their honesty and strength of character. Case in point Quaid-e-Azam. Yet now we HAVE such a leader in our midst. No leader of a political party worth his salt can accuse Imran Khan of corruption or any such thing. Musharraf, in his latest interview on Geo Tv, said that among his opponents, he considers Imran to be a man of character. This is the same Musharraf who once called Imran "Beardless Terrorist"! As a politician, Imran has proved himself to be incorruptible, honest and straightforward. It is interesting to note that his opponents can only accuse him of "rigidity", "immaturity" and "mistakes". We must think what a great man he must have been that within a system as Pakistani politics, he is accused of such infinitely forgivable crimes when one compares with the other leaders who are mired in corruption allegations and murder charges. As a leader, he is the only positive face of Pakistan on international media where his opinions and views are as outspoken as on Pakistani media. Wikileaks prove that he is not a hypocrite in the least and says on the face of Americans what he says to his Pakistani audience. Well, he is a good man, a moral man, a man of character. However, no one is perfect. But, what about those who need to save their "Political Shop" (Siasi Dukan)? How can they reply when Imran exposes their corruption? How can they respond when Imran exposes their terrorism? Can they accuse him back like they have done traditionally? Of course not. Even they know that the man is far from corrupt. Their traditional tactics of "Your too" don't work, can't work on Imran. So what they resort to is shameless accusations regarding his personal life and all, which only exposes their own lack of moral backbone. When they have nothing substantive to discredit Imran Khan with, they resort to personal attacks and base language. The second category of people that speak against Imran are those who call themselves "liberals", while knowing nothing about liberalism. They think that opposing Muslim extremists makes you liberal, no matter if you are corrupt, if you are involved in political violence and terrorism. They think advocating bombing of tribal areas and wroughting havoc on the tribals just because some terrorists are hidden amidst them is being liberal, while those who dare to point out the humanity of the tribal people and oppose actions which lead to killings of hundreds of innocent people ("collateral damage"), are "extremists". In short, following American orders makes you liberal, and thinking independently and humanely makes you extremist. If they were to think straight, they would realize that Imran Khan is the true liberal political leader in Pakistan. He espouses everything that is liberal in the true sense. Liberalism means you respect people rights, their dignity, their humanity. All the liberals in America OPPOSE war in Afghanistan and Iraq, call for cuts in defense budget, increase funds for education, opposing war mongering attitude in the name of nationalism and patriotism - everything that Imran Khan stands for in his own country. And then there are those who might have personal grudge against Imran. I will post further when I have time, but to me this sums up the story of many of Imran's opponents. Those who know the truth must stand firm and vote for Imran and get him to power. The traditional foothold of the Siasi Badmash (political criminals) in this country must be broken.

They promised the public many times that they have a nice and pragmatic plan but I think they don't have one. While most who ruled the country besides speaking English had no vision or relevant knowledge. Arsalan | 13 years ago | Reply @Umer Farooq: bottom line boys and girls: despite all his shortcomings there should be no doubt on his loyalty for the nation and understanding of the pakistani masses at large. forget political realities for two minutes and stop it with the 'beard in his belly' nonsense. this is how a political web is created to keep people like imran khan at bay and away from the circus that is pakistani politics. suggestion: as good as some of the articles were on the so-called liberal revolution; i doubt a storm will brew in the tea cup. there are many more people who use the other medium of media (tv) relative to reading. the ones that do read the english print will wait for a bandwagon to hop on to but cannot initiate anything only because they themselves dont believe in it enough. if a change has to come, it needs to be through the correct channel. the ONLY channel which will matter. a cannel through which there is reason for unity because quiet frankly our nation is fragmented like never before. a channel which is present in every single household and provides impetus to english print readers. a solid and incorruptable foundation with a solitary objective. the objective cannot be new governance or system; that is going to be a result!! the objective needs to be myopically narrowed down to the simple fact that any and all currently active politicians need to be done away with and done away with for GOOD!! dont just change the government, change the opposition too!!!! a landslide for 2 parties (choose your poison) which never have been. this incorruptable foundation is sitting in our schools, colleges and universities. not KU, or punjab university. though there are SO many respectable people who can claim 'goodness' with reference to those institutions but even they would agree that by-and-large there is mass 'corruption' of thought. so the initiation has to come from LUMS, KGS, IBA, CBM, Lyceum, etc etc.

Maria | 13 years ago | Reply The only people who harp on about Imran Khan's past personal life have a political agenda but the truth is that I would prefer Imran Khan's character over any of our civilian politicians or dictators. He is an honest man who has earned the respect of most Pakistanis, even those who don't agree with his politics. Only Allah can judge a man on his past deeds; it's not for people to past judgement on Imran Khan's past affairs. Moreover, I think the crimes carried out by all and sundry politicians and dictators far outweigh anything Imran Khan may or may not have done. He has planned for restoring 100 villages and time will prove that he will make these villages. Your concern about team are right to some extent. However, due to boycott of last election, our recent team did not manage to make space in main stream media like GEO, ARY, Duniya, Dawn, Express etc, but we have shadow spokes person for all sectors assisted by two technocrates. Actually Imran Khan has been a successful cricketer but he is badly failed in politics. he seeking himself PM of this country but he does not have any political program in small provinces. People are so confused about his political role, on one side he opposes western culture and Israel but he got married with Jew girl and he worked for his brother in law at British in Muslim community so what people can understand him, is he a Hypocritical politician or making people fool. when ever he comes on talk show he portrayed himself a true and believed on Islamic Ideology but in Islam once you divorced woman cant make social contact with former husband but he keeps meeting with his divorced wife and he comes and visits with his divorced wife. i think these things counts in politics because people of Pakistan looking for change and he has declared himself either he is secular Muslim or traditional Muslim. he deals his practice secularly but he talks about Islamic ideology and is this not a hypocracy?

About the rest, if I analyze him realistically w/o being biased toward any specific sect, in a COMPARATIVE way, he seems the most sincere, just, capable and the only chance right now. Assume you live in Palastine and Israelis bombed your entire family and only you are left and you are given the option to suicide bomb somewhere in Israel. Imran khan misbehaves with all the women in his life and finally with his wife. Now at the older age, he wants to portray himself as a noble and pious man by having hospital and universities. He must bring some other personalities in his party that can bring a soft image for the nation. Finally a corrupt person whether monetary or personality wise should be taken carefully.

I wonder what those people know who are successful politician in this country. Are they spiritually more democratic? No. Have they got any tangible achievements for the country? No. Have they got a vision? No. So kindly don not reject this man simply because he was a cricketer. The fact that Imran could not turn himself into successful politician has other reasons. It is actually the failure of the system, not Imran's. Today the phenomenon of pluralism has so deeply influenced this society that no major political ideology has found major support over the past many years. Bhutto and Anti-bhutto vote remains the deciding factor of the elections ill date. No single man no matter how great he is will be able to establsih the required network of the party organization throughout the country in the presence of the local corrupt biggies across the five provinces! Perhaps he also will become an ideology or a phenomenon when he is physically no more :(

His political mistakes: 1. In 1997, he and Gen. Hamid Gul(ex ISI chief) contacted Mr. Edhi to help them overthrow the elected government of Nawaz Sharif. Interview by Dawn with Edhi. 2. His ties with Gen. Hamid Gul makes him more suspicious. Gen. Hamid Gul is the person who is responsible for crafting the Afghan Jihad against Soviet Union whose fruits can be seen in the form of terrorist activities nowadays. The same Jihadists are firing back now :) 3. Making alliance with right-wing/religious parties like JI and JUI who have never given fatwas against terrorist organizations and terrorists unlike other religious organizations. 4. His half supporting comments for Talibans saying they are doing all this in retaliation of Army Operation and then saying whatever they are doing is wrong. What kind of message he is trying to give to people and to those militants? There are many more reasons for not supporting IK as politician, but i think if you have any know how of politics of Pakistan you might understand the other reasons too.

I have never seen him talking about our foreign policy except few borrowed sentences from MMA type parties. His views about the extremist militants are really puerile. As for your comment, you were very quick to dismiss the criticism on others, as far as I can remember the hue and cry about Nilopher Bakhtyar was that "look at our education minister, hugging a guy publicly etc etc", nobody complained regarding whether public money was used or not, because that clip was taken during her private vacations. His personal life is very relevant because HE made it relevant - do some research and read his website - he talks and writes about family values and islamic law and promotes them as a key part of his manifesto.

I read everything very carefully and havent signed or dont know anyone who has signed such ridicoulous contracts. Founded international higher education in Pakistan for vulnerable and we see Namal University in Paksiatn and a UK's university taking pride to have Imran as their Chancellor and collaborating for Namal. Imran and his personal life and his relationships have no bearing on his ability to lead, he has proven that time and again. Imran has been honest with his work as a crickter and as a social worker and that is what we should be judging him on not what he does in his bedroom ( i am sure you would like to know that too). Do you tell your bosses what you do at home or how many girlfriends you have had no i dont think you would because it has no bearing on your work. Coming to your issue of Article 62 the debate is never over till one side concedes and i have never conceded to a weaker argument, just to prove your point you have decided to ignore the competence of the courts and the judges that are in place to do the best interpretation of the constitution. There are literally millions of illegal arms circulating in the society; there are private armies, powerful gangs and militias operating in the country. In case of taliban, its beyond the capacity of local police or lashkars to counter their tremendous fire power. Yes people are suffering because of the deals made with taliban which gave away vast swathes of land and allowed them to further strengthen their hold. According to a latest survey, 75 % tribals support military operations. the same survey ranks Imran as most popular politician of FATA. I am not opposed to negotiations but negotiations should only lead to laying down of arms by taliban and complete writ of the state; not the Imrans solution of handing over entire FATA to TTP. Its the taliban who have the guns in their hand and their demands are unacceptable i.e their brand of Sharia! Operations failed duing Musharraf era because he was playing double games to milk the Yanks; operations under Kiyani have succeeded, especially in Swat. Forget about US, they will pack their bags and leave but this is our home; talibanization only means destruction.

Kindly stay in Autralia and if possible try to go further South. @ Faraz....Imran doesnt consider the Taliban a legitamate polical movement, he gives the reason he thinks the Taliban have gained ground in KP there is a difference in the two. He doesnt say there was extremism, he says there were no widespread suicide bombings prior to 2004 which is a fact. He gave a point of view that since justice system had failed in areas like SWAT the Taliban have filled that vaccum via speedy justice. Imran opposes all sorts of military operations even the one in Balochistan and also denounced the Karachi Operation in the 1990's so he is against military option per say not against a particular operation. Maybe you should visit the northern Areas and see how the people who were displaced are doing maybe then you will understand the logic behind why Imran was not supporting the military operation. The people are still displaced they are facing extreme economic hardships. To top it all off the US is not considering negotiating with the Taliban our lord masters have said its okay maybe its time we should also wake up and try to resolve this issue of extremism via a long term strategy of social and economic justice rather than through the barrel of the gun. The barrel of the gun has failed miserably and Imran stands vindicated.

Imran Khan is quite vocal for supremacy of Law and Constitution , so according to Pakistani Constitution he Can't Participated in elections as it is a written court order against Mr Khan that he is father of Tyrain White. **Till article 62 present in Pakistani Constitution which says, [62. Qualifications for membership of Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament). A person shall not be qualified to be elected or chosen as a member of Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament) unless (d) he is of good character and is not commonly known as one who violates Islamic Injunctions; (e) he has adequate knowledge of Islamic teachings and practises obligatory duties prescribed by Islam as well as abstains from major sins.** So dear Author, If you and all Mr Khan's fans believe in Law and Constitution i am afraid you all should ask Mr Khan to stay away from contesting elections, Law and Constitution is Supreme so like Good Civilized educated and law abiding citizens of Pakistan accept the reality. Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital is Imran Khan's only humanitarian contribution to society and even this Hospital is being run as autonomous body since nearly a decade. If Imran Khan decides to part ways with the Hospital or God-forbid, Imran passes away, I am sure the Hospital's management is mature enough to raise their own funds, perhaps in a more efficient manner than Khan sahab. Only 10% patients are treated free at the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital. This is by no means a small feat but nevertheless, Mr Khan's expectations from the Pakistani people are far, far greater than his humanitarian contribution to society. This is a hint enough for us (the people of Pakistan), to solemnly conclude that Imran Khan is keen to en-cash his popularity accumulated as the "Glamorous Bachelor", which is significantly greater than his appeal as a cricket legend or a social worker. No wonder he get all his votes from the posh areas. Unlike the common man, Imran's posh voters admire and copy his lifestyle without any shame, embarrassment or discomfort. The handful of voters who do not fall in this category assume that Imran Khan has 'changed' or has 'regrets' about his former Playboy status. Mr Khan meanwhile plays it safe and doesn't make any comments to confirm or deny the presumed 'regrets'. He is seeking votes from both categories of voters after all ;)

He often says that there was no extremism before 2004; what about the thousands of jihadis and dozens of organizations which existed before 911? His stance on TTP Swat was the most disappointing. He created a myth that people support taliban because of they have brought speedy justice. He didnt change his stance even after 2008 elections when people of Swat voted for secular ANP. Millions voted for ANP but Imran said that people support taliban. After Nizam-e-Adal regulation, the myth was finally exposed when taliban furhter advanced into Buner. It was the ultimte proof that taliban wanted to take over the state but Imran still opposed the military operation that was launched. He later came up with another lame argument that the displaced IDPs would live in camps for years. When IDPs started returning, Imran claimed that there has been so much destruction that entire cities have been razed to the ground. When people returned, everything was fine! Sectarian terrorism is a 3 decade old problem and top leadership of TTP are ex-members of notorious LeJ and presently there is a lethal nexus between TTP and LeJ, but Imran says that Blackwater is behind it; you call this objective analysis? Seriously, PTI members should ask Imran to reconsider his stance on terrorism, it will earn him much more support. Imran has support among youth but Imran's stance on terrrorism is more in line with 40 year olds who grew up during Zia era.

And only in Pakistan (or among neo-cons) would trying to understand the motivations & the impact of geo-politics on terrorism result in you being labelled as some sort of enemy of the state. You can disagree with Imran Khan, but he states his position with clarity. PML-N & PPP are not so clear. They support the WOT, but also spend every opportunity they have denouncing Musharraf's decisions. Imran Khan has far more in common with world progressive opinion, than the so-called 'liberals' of Pakistan. The policy of whack-a-mole is a complete failure, & a serious overview of strategy is needed. People also have a tendency to regurgitate extremely out-of-date observations of the state of his political party. He has just completed a very successful 'people contact' campaign in South Punab, & his party is organising itself down to village level. Atika also forgot to mention the flood relief work he's doing. Not only is his foundation building over 100 villages; He has had the foresight to involve other NGOs (Orangi Pilot Project, Citizens Foundation & Shaukat Khanum) to better the villages with a sewrage system, school & medical clinic. As for a 'politician's personal life'....It amazes me that no other politician in Pakistan endures the same level of scutiny. We would only have to scratch beneath the surface for a cornucopia of scandals to pop up about every other leader, both presently & historically. IK does not employ deception or deny his past. He maintains a dignified silence on his personal life. Can I suggest a few pieces on the present PM & President. Let's forget about their personal lives, I would be interested in reading about their economic vision. But then, those in power are not required to have competence or a vision. Come the election in 2013, 'personal issues' will be the least of the everyday citizens concerns.

Whether he is a good politician now, or whether he'll make a good leader eventually is not what i am predicting. My point is that he is dedicated to the cause that he undertakes, and does a good job at it - we can see material differences that he has made. I didn't talk about his political influence at all, just pointed out that dismissing him on the grounds of his 'colourful' personal life is a silly criticism, and one that critics resort to often enough.

Does it really matter how many times he was married (or divorced) or how many women he dated in his heyday? As a matter of fact, it does matter. Even the presidential candidate of US elections has to face it. Clinton was questioned repeatedly over his relationship with few women. But in Pakistan, almost every politician has the same past record, but most of the times it is hidden.

It is purely a reflection of the fact that one is human. As a public figure one must be assertive and charismatic and, as a human being, one is prone to impulsive action and mistakes. IK is not doesn't matter and future does. He is competent, honest and honorable quality lacking in majority of other politicians.

Ghausia | 14 years ago | Reply Your lead paragraph made me think "Monica Lewinsky". :D That's just about the only reason I love Bill Clinton, that and Don't Ask, Don't Tell cause at least he tried to help the LGBT community, unlike other presidents. I'll agree with you on all points, except the end. Imran Khan can do a lot better for the country as a social worker, I don't think he'll get corrupted if in power, but he could either a) fail miserably due to his clean politics approach, b) get killed or neatly dethroned or c) attempt to Islamize the country and that frightens me the most, mainly because I think that no matter how 'liberal' he may seem to his loyal youth following, he's quite the fundie, and I'd rather not have that thank you very much. Plus, I liked him a lot better when he was a playboy, he's too preachy now. Criticism of him aside, much as I try to avoid praising blogs by sub-editors to avoid being accused of buttering them up by others, I have to say, this was very well-written. :)

But when Imran simply ignores the taliban's extremist ideology that they impose on people's personal lives, then questions about Imran's personal life do emerge. He justified the crimes committed by taliban; he claims that talibanization is not a religiously motivated but politically drive. Taliban flogged women, forced women to wear shuttle-cock burqa, prohibited women from shopping, amputated limbs, bombed CD and tailor shops, imposed a dress-code, killed women teachers and constables; but Imran persists with his illogical rhetoric that taliban have brought justice! So why not apply the same criteria of justice on Imran?

Small-minded people will always come up with something irrational and stupid to support their sickening arguments regarding his marriage and past women. Previous article by mehreen khan was pathetic as she used it to exploit imrans personal life.. and I agree with the writer that why people are obsessed with personal lives of politicians, they should be judged by thier work and contributions and not by how many girl friends they have dated. Together with Shaukat Khanam, Imrans Khans other achievements include the NUML univerisity in Mianwali. People from Mianwali, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Kundian, Attock and many other remote areas would be able to study on the modern lines, equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and run by the able staff of Bradford University, UK of which Imran Khan is also a chancellor. NICE WORK ATIKA REHMAN !!!
