The anticipated second season of the "Game of Thrones" spin-off "House of the Dragon" is set to premiere this weekend. This season will depict the "Dance of the Dragons," a civil war within the Targaryen family that threatens to tear the Seven Kingdoms apart in a battle for the Iron Throne.

Picking up from where Season 1 concluded, the new season will focus on the war between the factions led by King Aegon II and Queen Rhaenyra. The civil conflict, described as a battle of dragon versus dragon and kin versus kin, is expected to lead to the end of Targaryen rule, though the journey to that end remains to be seen.

Recap of Season 1

"House of the Dragon" is adapted from George R.R. Martin's novel "Fire & Blood" and is set 200 years before the events of "Game of Thrones." The series focuses on the Targaryen family under King Viserys I Targaryen. Season 1 explored King Viserys's rule and the conflict arising from his decision to name his daughter, Rhaenyra, as his heir, breaking the male-only succession tradition.

The season finale saw Aemond Targaryen (son of King Viserys and Alicent Hightower) killing Lucerys Velaryon (son of Princess Rhaenyra), setting off the "Dance of the Dragons." This civil war will see the Greens (led by Alicent and King Aegon II) and the Blacks (headed by Rhaenyra and Daemon) battling for the throne, with other prominent families like the Starks, Lannisters, and Baratheons becoming involved.
