PESHAWAR:

Local leaders and workers of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz set up a camp on Sher Shah Suri Road on Monday to protest against the party’s central leadership.

They demanded recognition of their services and asked for resources so development and progress of the party could continue in K-P.  The workers shouted slogans against the PML-N leadership for failing to treat them equally.

“People tell us the party is in government [at the Centre], but we can’t even start a small development project at the local level,” said PML-N K-P Vice President Waqif Khan. “This is why the party failed to secure seats in the local government elections,” he continued.  Party workers claimed they had nothing in hand to initiate small development projects. Waqif stressed such initiatives were essential for the survival of any political party.  He added all workers and leaders should be treated equally in a democratic political party.

Protesters also said Nawaz Sharif should be aware “ideological workers” had rendered great sacrifices for the party in K-P.  Rashid Mehmood, Arbab Said Haider, Sattar Khalil, Haji Noor Muhammad, Aminullah Buneri, Shams Afridi and others were leading workers at the protest camp. They vowed to continue with the demonstration till the central leadership paid heed to their grievances. They also asked Nawaz Sharif and PML-N K-P President Pir Sabir Shah to grant rights to party workers so that they could serve people and secure a vote bank for the next general elections.

“When a military dictator overthrew the PML-N government [in 1999], it was these political workers who struggled for party’s survival for years,” said Mehmood.
