Hundreds of Pakistanis have joined Syrians, Afghans and Africans in trying to get onto European shores in recent weeks, with some perishing along the way. Indeed, for some Europe may not have been their main destination with search terms on Google indicating curiosity for certain destinations.

According to Google search trends data from 2014-15 for G-8 countries, mapped by Mother JonesPakistanis were most curious about immigration to Canada, ranking ninth out of 185 countries searching for it.

The second most searched immigration destination was UK, with Pakistan ranking 24 out of 167 countries searching for means to emigrate to the British isles.

Contrary to perceptions, US was a distant fifth (59 out of 211 countries), behind the likes of Germany (37 out of 137 countries) and Russia (29 out of 104 countries).

Italy, which like Greece has become a conduit for migrants on their way to western European destinations like Germany, France and UK, was sixth on the search priorities for Pakistanis, ranked at 42 out of 142 countries.

Surprisingly, however, Japan ranked higher than France on the search preference for Pakistanis with the Oriental nation coming in at 38 out of 104 countries compared to 84 out of 143 countries for the western European nation.
