PESHAWAR: FATA sports directorate has rejected allegations of sexual harassment levelled against department director by a football player.

Addressing a news conference at Peshawar Press Club on Tuesday, sports officer Muhammad Imran said Yasir Shah Afridi, a senior football player who has represented Pakistan in 80 international matches, attempted to tarnish Ayaz Muhammad Khan’s reputation after the latter refused to sign a request submitted by the former two days ago.

“Afridi asked Ayaz to allow him to work in Qatar ahead of the forthcoming world cup,” Imran said.

Ayaz responded he will check if regulations permit such a decision.

“A day later, Afridi telephoned and said he will not play for the directorate,” he said. “In the evening, he addressed a press conference and accused the director of sexual harassment.”

Also speaking on the occasion, sports manager Wahid Gul denied such allegations, saying they are false and baseless.

“Some elements are not pleased by the way checks and balances are being maintained on corrupt practices,” he said. “As a result, they are resorting to baseless propaganda.”

FATA Olympic Association had earlier protested against what its members called Ayaz’s “immoral activities” which are destroying the future of enthusiastic players.

Taking notice, SSP Operations Mian Saeed ordered an enquiry into the matter.

Speaking at a news conference on Monday, Afridi had alleged the director offered him the post of assistant director in return for sexual favours.
