The porn sites are not available on most of the ISPs since Saturday night.

A notice saying “this site has been blocked as per the instructions of competent authority” surprised many Indians as they failed to access pornographic sites on their servers today.

The error is being viewed as the possible imposition of a ban by the Indian government. According to a report in Hindustan Times, porn sites were not available on most of the internet service providers (ISPs) including Vodafone, MTNL, ACT, Hathway and BSNL since Saturday night.

Earlier in July, the Chief Justice of India HL Dattu and the Supreme Court guaranteed Indians a right to personal liberty which allows them to watch pornography in private.

But the recent step by authorities has sparked outrage on social media. Indians mocked the government when they ended up with a blank page while searching for popular porn sites. #Pornban started trending on Twitter as twitteratis raised questions about the blocked websites.

Here are few of the reactions:

I think BJP is underestimating how quickly it is becoming massively unpopular. That too within just over a year of coming to power.

Too many wrong moves in too short a time. Guess, they’ll have to face a bigger loss in the coming elections than what Congress faced last year.Recommend

Banning porn can be create social disturbance in long run as it will devoid people of sex knowledge, ban should not have happened as long as one watch in private within 4 walls but doing so in public and offending others for one personal activity should be made liable for punishment but that is a more about maintaining law and order situation and how to do it is Govt’s responsibility but banning all total may be counterproductive.Indian SC has also said the same and even GOI themselves have also said that banning them all will do more harm than good while replying to a petition in SC.Recommend

I once read London was considering a porn ban too. It’s not just about “Islam” — some values are relatively universal. Also, these bans are usually quite easily circumventable with VPNs ;)Recommend

Well, nice dig at India, but check rape rates in Pakistan.

28/100,000 people get raped in Pakistan, while the same number for India is 0.4/100,000

India has the largest number of prostitutes in the world, with this ban this industry might grow, but at the same time India is second in development of porn sites in the world after US. Lacs of people involved in developing porn sites in India…what ‘ll happen to them. This might not last long. Recommend
