LAHORE: The court handed over on Saturday former Chairman National Insurance Company Limited (NICL) Ayyaz Khan Niazi to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) till December 21, extending his physical remand for three more days.

Niazi was arrested for a dubious land purchase scam involving an amount of Rs2.75 billion.

Niazi’s counsel submitted an application against Director FIA Punjab Zafar Ahmad Qureshi and his team members on account of alleged torture of his client. Niazi was forcibly kept awake by continuously splashing cold water on his face, said the counsel. He was verbally abused and forced to stand naked on the rooftop of the FIA building at night, he added. Meanwhile, Niazi informed the court that no one was allowed to meet him and his lawyer was granted access on the third request.

The FIA counsel and the investigation team, however, rejected Niazi and his counsel’s allegations.

The court directed the FIA authorities to avoid torture during interrogation and on the request of his counsel, approved a medical check-up of Niazi.

Meanwhile, director FIA Punjab Zafar Ahmad Qureshi sent on Saturday a sixth reminder to director FIA Sindh regarding the early arrest of the accused Amin Qasim Dada in the dubious land purchase scam.

The letter, whose contents have been disclosed, added that Dada’s arrest is imperative for the resolution of the case. Declared a proclaimed offender by the court, Dada is still at large in Karachi purportedly because of the backing of influential elements.
