ISLAMABAD: Islamabad Chamber of Small Traders Patron Shahid Rasheed Butt on Wednesday urged the government to follow recommendations put forward by the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) water report in a bid to overcome problems faced by the country.

Implementation of the recommendations in the report, which covers issues from glaciers to reservoirs and even drainage system, can resolve many pressing issues to ensure economic returns, he said in a statement.

He said that immediate action on the report which has not seen light of the day for two years is needed for improving the quality of life of masses, revival of industry, saving lives, increasing productivity and ensuring prosperity.

The resolution of the energy crisis that has paralysed the economy also lies in implementation of the recommendations of the report, he said. The efforts of over a dozen world-class experts spanned over a year should not go waste due to political considerations, he emphasised.

Butt said that government can ask foreign experts to re-examine some points of the report which are seen difficult to implement at this point in time, however, the authorities should not sit on the report.

Pakistan ranks third in ADB’s top recipients of financing and the reluctance of authorities regarding the water report can make the bank uneasy.
