KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is aiming to set up a committee comprising eminent former cricketers in a bid to safeguard the interests of previous and current players associated with the game.

Chairman Shaharyar Khan hinted on its formation during his press conference in Karachi last Friday. Initially the board’s chief suggested that the incumbent cricket committee functioning under the chairmanship of Shakil Sheikh, a member of the Board of Governors (BoG), was likely to be abolished, but a PCB spokesman while speaking to The Express Tribune, clarified the statement.

The spokesman was quick to dispel the notion that the board was mulling over the removal of the Sheikh-led committee which has been criticised in several quarters in recent months largely due to its apparent ineffectiveness.

“What the chairman meant was that a new committee was likely to be introduced after seeking approval from the BoG, while the present committee under Shakil Sheikh would also continue to work simultaneously,” said the spokesman. “The committee under Sheikh is more administrative in nature while the new committee will help safeguard and protect the rights of former and present cricketers.”

The cricketers committee is expected to be a bridge between board officials and the often incensed group of former and present players.

The PCB is also likely to tabulate the suggestions of the committee on the improvement of the game in the country, especially the much-maligned domestic cricket structure that is set for yet another revision this year.
