KARACHI:

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) issued on Wednesday non-bailable warrants of arrest against a police officer investigating cases against a leader of the defunct Peoples Amn Committee, which was based in Lyari. The warrants were issued for Inspector Hussain Mehdi for failing to appear in court and submit progress reports about tracing the absconding suspects. Mehdi has been investigating two cases of attempted murder, assaulting police personnel, rioting and possessiing illicit weapons against Shahid Bikik, an alleged gangster running a drug cartel in Nazimabad. Bikik is facing a number of cases in different courts and is currently on bail. On Wednesday, the ATC-VIII judge issued warrants for the investigation officer and directed the Garden Headquarters SSP to produce him at the next hearing, which is scheduled to be held on June 23.
