KARACHI:

Police officials claimed to have arrested a suspect allegedly involved in the murder of the head of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre’s pathological department over four years ago.

Prof Dr Saleem Ahmed Kharal, the younger brother of Pakistan Peoples Part MPA Naeem Kharal, was shot dead by armed assailants when he resisted a robbery bid near Punjab Chowrangi within the limits of Gizri police station on January 30, 2011.

The accused, identified as Ahmed Shaikh alias Hammad Shaikh, was arrested by the Baloch Colony police a week ago. He was later handed over to the Clifton police over suspicion. “We took custody of him and interrogated him,” Ali Raza Leghari, the Clifton police station’s investigation officer, told The Express Tribune, adding that, during interrogation, Shaikh admitted to killing Dr Kharal for resisting a robbery bid.

The officer said that the complainant and a witness had also identified the suspect.

Meanwhile, Khawaja Ajmer Nagri police claimed to have apprehended two alleged target killers, Mehboob alias Timatar and Adnan alias Mullah, in North Karachi. Police officials said that the suspects belonged to a political party and had been involved in killing over a dozen members of rival parties. Two hand grenades and two pistols were also seized from their possession.
