David Warner’s fluent 91 off 55 deliveries set the tone for Sunrisers Hyderabad’s 16-run win, courtesy the Duckworth-Lewis method, over defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday.
Captain Warner hit nine boundaries and four sixes and set up a 130-run opening stand with Shikhar Dhawan before being dismissed by Morne Morkel. Dhawan’s 54 also helped Hyderabad post 176-4.
Morkel snared two wickets in his four overs and conceded 31 runs.
Rain halted the continuation of play for a while, after which the target was revised to 118 off 12 overs for Kolkata.
Opener Robin Uthappa and captain Gautam Gambhir stepped up to the wicket, only for the latter to be sent back to the pavilion after scoring just four runs with Kolkata standing on 35.
Uthappa tried to hold on but was caught on short leg by Praveen Kumar off a Moises Henriques delivery. The wicketkeeper-batsman’s 34 was the highest score for his side, with Manish Pandey contributing 33.
Kolkata could only manage 101-4 in 12 overs, 17 runs short of achieving their target.
The win was Hyderabad’s second in the current IPL season, while Kolkata lost the second match out of five in their quest to successfully defend their title.
