BBC Pakistani presenter Mishal Husain named broadcaster of the year

Husain was nominated alongside Channel 4’s Matt Frei, BBC correspondent Alison Holt and BBC reporter Tulip Mazumdar

British Pakistani Mishal Husain won Broadcaster of the year at the London Press Club awards, setting an example for women globally.

"It's wonderful and much deserved," said the BBC's director of news James Harding.

She was nominated alongside Channel 4 News’ Matt Frei, BBC social affairs correspondent Alison Holt and BBC global health reporter Tulip Mazumdar.

Husain was congratulated by the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) on twitter as well as her followers and fellow nominees, who said the award was richly-deserved.

She thanked everyone for the congratulatory messages on twitter and said that she was proud to be in the company of her fellow nominees.

Husain has previously worked on various projects; her first job being with Bloomberg Television in London in 1996, where she was producer and sometimes presenter.

She has worked for BBC World news and BBC news channel.

Hussain also reported from around the world and was the BBC Washington's correspondent during the invasion of Iraq, and also reported from Cairo during the Egyptian revolution and China during the Beijing Olympics.

Born in Northampton to a Pakistani family, she moved to UAE with her parents, where she attended a British school. She later studied law at New Hall Cambridge and received her Master’s degree in International and Comparative law from Florence, Italy.

Hussain was also named in Britain’s 50 most powerful Muslim women in 2009.
