KARACHI:

The Sindh government has finally established the province’s first deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) testing laboratory in Jamshoro, according to a notification issued by the health department on Tuesday.

The health department has established the much-needed laboratory at the Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS). Officials said that it was difficult for the provincial government to send samples of the bodies out of province and to get them back on urgent basis.

The health department had been under pressure after major accidents in Sindh, especially in Karachi such as the Baldia factory fire and the Kathore Link Road accident, as there was no proper laboratory for DNA verification process. Whenever the need arose, the provincial government used to send the samples to the National Forensic Scientific Agency (NFSA) in Islamabad — a process that used to delay identification.

While no specific date of commencement of operations was mentioned in the notification, any samples that need to be sent for DNA verification in Sindh will now be sent to the laboratory set up at LUMHS.
