The mother made tremendous efforts to help her baby out of the muddy well by using her trunk to pull the baby out after which she made use of her feet.
However, the desperate mother's attempts were in vain as the baby elephant was pushed back in the well and almost suffocated. The baby was trapped from 9pm until 8am the next morning.

Locals in Chatra district arrived at the scene and managed to remove the soil from around the baby elephant in order to get a grip of it.
One of the locals at the scene told media, "We chopped off a few banana trucks and put it near the well so that the mother elephant would move away for some time."

He added further: “The plan worked and we used the time to remove the heap of sand deposited near the well that was making it difficult for her to rescue the baby.”
The mother then continued her efforts, wrapping her trunk around the muddy baby elephant and managed to pull it out.
