ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tobacco Board (PTB) has established two research stations with a model tobacco farm in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and two sub-research stations in Punjab to enhance production and improve quality of tobacco. The research stations have been established at Mardan, Mansehra and the model farm at Buner while two sub-research stations have been set up at Kunjah and Okara. In addition to these, PTB has also acquired land for a research station at Jampur, Punjab and for a model farm at Pishin, Balochistan but research work there has not yet begun due to occupation of land by illegal occupants in Jampur and poor law and order situation in Balochistan. Sources said Mardan has the main tobacco research station and most of the research activities are going on there, other sub-research stations are meant for the trial of new varieties. Moreover, after a number of agronomic experiments, different intercultural practices (de-suckering, deep ploughing, weeding and crop protection techniques), have been developed to improve the quality of tobacco.
