KARACHI: Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s romance-drama Devdas is set to grace Pakistani screens for the first time on March 13.

Celebrated actors Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachan and Madhuri Dixit star in the Bollywood movie, which is being imported by Distribution Club (previously known as IMGC Entertainment).

“We wanted to screen Devdas as it is considered one of the greatest Bollywood films of all time. On the other hand, the cricket world cup going on currently has had an impact on the box office so we have decided to show old classics like these,” informed Sabeena Islam, Marketing Manager of the Distribution Club.

Managing Director of Mandviwalla Entertainment Nadeem Mandviwalla elaborated on the decision behind screening the film in Pakistani cinemas, saying, “It is an iconic film and it has a lot of fanfare attached to it; plus, a lot of the people have not seen movie in cinemas as well.”

He added that Devdas was not the only film that was being imported in the country as there are “at least two to four films more like these that we can at least attempt to screen in the country.”

Mandviwalla, who is also importing another Bollywood classic Sholay, spoke about how these movies tend to create “recall value” among audiences.

“You need to look at these films differently. It would be wrong to have very high expectations from a film that is being re-released in Pakistan. You should not expect back-to-back full-houses and at the same time, you cannot market it like a regular film,” stated Mandviwalla.

Another Bollywood and Shah Rukh Khan classic that will soon be releasing in Pakistan is the 1995 romantic drama Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.

Excited fans of the film have taken to Twitter to share the news.
