LAHORE:

A division bench of the Lahore High Court on Thursday reserved its ruling on the maintainability of an intra-court petition, seeking trial of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif under Article 6 of the Constitution.

The bench, headed by Justice Aminudin Khan, was hearing a petition filed by Iqtidar Haider.

The petitioner claimed that the prime minister had flouted official regulations by appointing his own daughter Maryam Nawaz as chairperson of the Youth Loan Scheme.

Calling Maryam’s appointment a blatant violation of the Constitution, Haider pleaded that the prime minister should be tried under article 6 of the Constitution.

In its ruling last year, the superior court had directed the federal government to replace Maryam with another individual as
chairperson of the Youth Loan Programme – one of Premier Nawaz’s pet projects aimed at bankrolling small business ventures for the youth.
