PESHAWAR:

A Shia man was shot in Hayatabad Friday morning and breathed his last at Hayatabad Medical Complex.

A police official said Qaisar Hussain hailed from Asterzai, Kohat but was residing in Musharraf Labour Colony and working at a pharmaceutical unit in Hayatabad Industrial Estate. "He was shot, injured by unidentified attackers and was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries." The police official added it appeared to be a targeted sectarian attack, but said the situation would be clearer once the statement Hussain recorded before he died is analysed and the bereaved relatives contacted.

Separately, police foiled separate attempts to smuggle weapons and recovered small arms from two vehicles in Chamkani and Mattani. Officers tried to intercept a car on the service road near the motorway but the driver sped away, after which police chased it and found the vehicle abandoned by the roadside.

One hundred and fifty repeaters and 12 rifles were found hidden inside the car. Police said the fire arms were being smuggled to Punjab.
