KARACHI:

Sameer Zawar scored three runs to lead Pakistan to their first victory after defeating Iraq 20-0 in the opening match of the 12th West Asian Baseball Cup at the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) Complex, Islamabad on Monday.

Pakistan scored 20 runs in five innings, in which Umer, Waqas and Ahsan contributed two runs each apart from Zawar’s three. Fazalul Rehman hit a home run to be declared man of the match.

“Playing with Iraq was easy as they aren’t exactly tough opponents, but this win has heightened our confidence for the upcoming matches,” said Zawar.

India and Iran make up the remaining participants of the tournament, while Afghanistan failed to make it as their complete documents were not submitted to the Inter Provincial Coordination on time.
