Karachi win as PAF, Pakistan Steel draw

Semi-finals of the Quaid-e-Azam Gold Cup to be played today

KARACHI: Karachi won their last pool match, while PAF and Pakistan Steel recorded a draw on the fifth day of the 5th Customs Quaid-e-Azam Gold Cup hockey tournament at the Customs Preventive Service Club & Sports Complex, Karachi on Wednesday.

In the first match, Karachi defeated Police 6-2 as Allay Hassan scored two field goals in the 25th and 57th minutes respectively.

Karachi took the lead through Wasim Aslam’s fifth-minute field goal, while Shujjat Ali scored the second in the 11th through a penalty corner and Sharjeel struck a 31st-minute field goal. Ali Hassan scored the last goal for Karachi by successfully converting a penalty corner in the 59th minute.

Ansar Ali was the sole star for Police as two of his strikes found the back of his net in the 35th and 39th minutes.

Meanwhile, the other match between PAF and Pakistan Steel ended in a 2-2 draw.

Pakistan Steel opened the scoring through Abbas Hayder’s goal in the 38th minute, which was equalised by PAF’s Mushtaq Ali three minutes later. Mushtaq then struck again in the 49th minute to give his side the lead. However, Hayder converted a penalty corner in the 50th minute to end the match in a draw.

The semi-final matches on Thursday will see NBP battle it out with Railways, while PIA will play against hosts Customs.
