FAISALABAD: Amid growing apprehension over gas supply, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) General Manager Amjad Mumtaz has said efforts have been made to ensure Faisalabad receives its full share.

Addressing a meeting of businessmen and industrialists during his visit to the Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCCI), Mumtaz also said that steps have been taken to deter illegal installation of compressors on domestic gas connections.

According to Mumtaz, the major reasons behind gas shortage are depletion of existing gas reservoirs, and increase in gas demand.

The official said that the government has framed the national energy and gas load management policy and was strictly adhering to it while also resolving gas related issues.

He further said that the government is fully aware of the problem of gas shortage and was making earnest efforts to explore new gas reservoirs in addition to making arrangements for its import.

“However, a swift relief is not possible. Hence consumers should use this deficient commodity most sparingly particularly during the winter season.”

He also dismissed allegations that some areas were being preferred when it came to distribution of supply.

“A campaign has been launched against illegal installation of compressors and so far 100 compressors have been removed in addition to taking action against the violators.”

Meanwhile, FCCI President Engineer Rizwan Ashraf said that it was a general practice to suspend gas supply to industrial sector during winter every year.

“This practice is not only detrimental to the production process but was also causing unemployment in addition to depriving government from much needed foreign exchange and revenues.”

He added that business leaders from Faisalabad have started negotiations and successfully come up with a plan to use minimum gas in the national interest.
