ISLAMABAD: A month after Maryam Nawaz was removed as head of the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme, MNA Leila Khan was named as the body’s new chairperson on Thursday.

Khan, of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), had been serving as an advisor to Maryam since the programme's inception. She is also the central chief organiser of PML-N Women Youth Wing.

The youth programme hot-seat fell vacant after Maryam Nawaz Sharif resigned in November, with her appointment under scrutiny in court.

A statement released on Thursday said that she will oversee the PMYP purely on honorary basis, and will not draw any salary or perks, privileges.

On November 12, Maryam had tendered her resignation as chairperson of the programme. In a statement, she had said that it was an appropriate moment to hand over the reigns of the programme to another equally dedicated individual.

“This programme is here to stay and will touch new heights in days, weeks and months ahead.”

She added that though she is resigning from the youth loan programme, she intends to continue her ‘voluntary service’ for Pakistan and its people.
