Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) central and provincial leaders on Monday said the tragic event of December 16 has united the country against terrorism and militancy.
Addressing a news conference at Peshawar Press Club, the party’s senior leader from Sindh and former senior minister, Pir Mazharul Haq said the whole nation was in the grip of sorrow and grief. Provincial chief of PPP Khanzada Khan, K-P general secretary Humayun Khan, provincial information secretary Liaqat Shabab and other party leaders were also present on the occasion. After the news conference, they visited Lady Reading Hospital to meet the injured persons still receiving treatment at Peshawar’s largest medical facility. Over 10 children injured in Tuesday’s barbaric massacre at Army Public School carried out by Taliban gunmen are currently admitted at LRH.
Haq said the bitter political rivalry has taken a backseat in the backdrop of the attack. He hoped the political leaders will now take solid steps to eradicate militancy.
“Unfortunately, even democracy is in dangerous hands and the history of the country has been kept concealed from the people of the country,” said Haq, adding the country was envisioned to be a liberal state with different units constituting the federation of Pakistan. “Currently, even the basic foundations of the country are on unstable ground. We have to first protect democracy. After that, we can start our efforts to make Pakistan a secular and liberal state.”
The former senior minister added the incident should open the eyes of the nation which should stand by the armed forces as they take on the most brutal enemy of Pakistan. “We have been united by the sacrifices offered by our young children.”
