DERA GHAZI KHAN/ MULTAN:
Police claimed on Sunday to have arrested four suspects of terrorism and 13 wanted men in various operations south Punjab.
A police spokesman said Khalid Umar, who had just returned from Afghanistan, was arrested in Harappa. He said Umar had been wanted by police for three years.
He said three men were arrested from Rahim Yar Khan. He said the men had settled there after they were unable to escape to Afghanistan when Operation Zarb-e-Azab was launched in North Waziristan.
A Rajanpur police spokesman said 13 men involved in over 170 robberies had been arrested.
DPO Asif Rasheed said 27 motorbikes had been recovered from them.
He said three Kalashnikovs, pistols and hand grenades were also seized.
The DPO said the gang had been wanted for two years.
Security forces in Dera Ghazi Khan conducted several raids over the weekend in the wake of a proclamation of high alert in the country.
Investigation SP Abid Rahim Shirazi conducted search operations at hotels, guest houses, warehouses, traveller’s lodges and katchi abadis. The Elite Force and a special task force participated in the raids.
Police detained several people for not carrying proper identification documents and took them to undisclosed locations for interrogation.
DPO Ghulam Mubashar Maikan said on Sunday, “Police has never compromised on matters of security and after the massacre in Peshawar on December 16, there is no room for negligence.”
He said the police department was dedicated to protecting citizens and maintaining law and order in the country.
“No one will be allowed to destabilise peace in the country,” he said.
He said search operations would continue so that those involved in terrorism and spreading hate could be rooted out.
He urged citizens to remain vigilant about suspicious activities in their surroundings.
“Citizens are requested to call police on their control line 064-9260113 if they wish to report suspicious activity,” he added.
Illegal imports seized in raid
Sakhi Sarwar police on Sunday claimed to have recovered illegal imports worth Rs20 million and seized non-custom paid cars worth Rs10 million in a raid.
A police spokesman said two pistols, 500 bullets for pistols and 100 bullets for automatic weapons were also seized in a search operation at Triman check post.
He said police had stopped a truck travelling from Loralai to Lahore. He said the truck was loaded with 10 tobacco-filled sacks, eight boxes of electronic goods, an LCD television, eight boxes of electric heaters and five boxes of imported cloth.
He said a Toyota Corolla, a Land Cruiser and a Toyota Fielder were seized at the same check post.
He said several people had been detained and cases had been registered against them.
