Rain dampens splendid day for SA batsmen

The final session was rained out as hosts end day at 552-5

KARACHI: Debutant Stiaan van Zyl joined in the fun with skipper Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers to help the hosts reach 552-5 before declaring at tea.

However, South Africa’s hopes of taking a few wickets in the final session were ended by rain as no play was possible after tea.

The Proteas started the day at 340-3 with both Amla and De Villiers at the crease on centuries. De Villiers was soon back in the hut when he edged Sulieman Benn to point to make it 365-4 but not before completing his 150 and bringing up the 300-run partnership.

The dismissal brought Van Zyl out into the middle and after looking shaky early on, he took on the aggressors role as Amla reached his double century.

Amla was dismissed as he tried to clear long-on but was caught by Jerome Taylor off Benn. Van Zyl then completed his century and was unbeaten on 101 with Quinton de Kock on a 15-ball 18 at declaration.

All West Indian bowlers struggled and the visitors were poor in the field to make it another frustrating day out in the middle for them. Kemar Roach’s bowling yesterday made him the pick of the bowlers as he ended with figures of 2-52. However, the rest of the bowlers struggled as Benn’s 2-148 made him the second best bowler for his side, who used seven bowlers in all.
