PESHAWAR: World Space Week (WSW) 2014 concluded at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Peshawar on Tuesday with a prize distribution ceremony and a pledge to create space awareness among the public.

Students from schools and colleges across Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa participated in several competitions during the space week which was held in collaboration with Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco). The theme for this year’s event was Space: Guiding Your Way.

Addressing the concluding ceremony, chief guest UET Vice Chancellor Imtiaz Gilani appreciated the space week for enlightening the youth with scholarly views about space exploration.

According to Gilani, UET is working on 14 research projects with Suparco and some of them have the potential for commercial production. “UET has recently signed an MoU with the Directorate of Science and Technology worth Rs13.6 million to produce photovoltaic cells through economical and environment-friendly means,” he said.

These solar cells will encourage small and medium enterprises to use solar energy at affordable rates as compared to conventional sources of electricity, Gilani added.

Suparco Deputy Director General Ameen Bahadur expressed satisfaction over the arrangements for WSW. Bahadur lauded the efforts of various academic societies of the UET for their contribution to the space week and urged students to contribute positively toward the betterment of society.

Later, the chief guest distributed awards and certificates to advisers of these academic societies as well as winners of various competitions.
