NOWSHERA: Governor Mehtab Abbasi urged tribal elders to cooperate with security officials to address the plight of the displaced populations, stated a handout.

He was speaking during a visit to Jalozai camp for internally displaced persons (IDP) on Tuesday. According to the handout, Mehtab insisted joint efforts between tribal elders and security officials would make the repatriation of the displaced people easier.

Mehtab also met various families who had been displaced by the military operation in North Waziristan and pledged to resolve the problems they are facing on a priority basis.

Some IDPs urged the governor to provide them with the same level of compensation and relief as the IDPs in Bannu, the handout read. Moreover, they also asked the governor to ensure relief goods and food items are of a good quality.

Mehtab said the government realises the sacrifices the IDPs have made for their country and is willing to resolve their issue as soon as possible.

He said the government is determined to end militancy in the country, the handout added. This is why it has launched a series of military offensives in the tribal belt.

Mehtab handed over a cheque of Rs5 million for the makeshift schools set up for displaced children living at the camp.

Speaking about the polio epidemic which has plagued the country, Mehtab said most of the cases have been reported from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata). The government has taken a series of initiatives to combat the disease, added the governor.

Why do the media use the words IDPs? The people are, in fact, refugees fleeing from their homes due the Army operation against terrorists. The operation is continuing or has finished. NO ONE KNOWS. The people [refugees] do not know when they will return to their homes. Why?
