KARACHI:

Five more suspected militants were killed in another controversial encounter with the District Malir police on Friday evening.

The encounter took place when the District Malir police, led by SSP Rao Anwar, carried out a raid at the hideout of the militants in Swat Colony within the limits of the Quaidabad police. Police officials said that they faced resistance from the militants but they retaliated and called for backup.

Around 500 police commandos and personnel participated in the operation. "Five militants, including a Karachi-based commander, were killed," Anwar told The Express Tribune. Two militants were injured and arrested and they are in a critical condition. They are at Jinnah hospital under police security, he added.

"We received a tip-off that the militants are present at a house in Swat Colony," claimed DSP Rao Iqbal. The alleged militants belonged to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Quaidabad SHO Amanullah Marwat said that they were associated with the Shaheryar Mehsud group. "They were involved in the bomb blast at the Rangers Headquarter in North Nazimabad." Marwat claimed that one of the deceased militants has been identified as Misbah who was the Karachi-based commander of the group.

This was the second such encounter in less than two weeks by the same police. On October 31, District Malir police claimed to have killed three suspected militants who were planning to carry out an attack on Muharram's central procession.
